Precautions When Using Herbicides On Barley
Notes from the experimental farm advise caution with selective weed herbicides on barley due to crop sensitivity at growth stages. Spraying should wait until the fourth leaf expansion or about six inches high, then avoid risk of yield loss by timing around boot and flowering stages. For annual weeds, amine 2 4 D is preferred. ester requires species specific rates from two to eight ounces per acre. Perennial weeds like Canada thistle need six to eight ounces per acre, most effective when stems are robust.
