Dr. W G Ritchie analyzes Liberal polls and Tory gains as June elections fade. He notes economic missteps and a plunging dollar, predicts possible fall or spring elections, and mentions Quebec separatism talks and a potential Liberal leadership change toward John Turner.
Manitoba introduces a merit system for safe drivers effective September 1. Drivers with accident and conviction free records can earn up to five merit points, each offsetting two demerit points. Points accumulate at one per two years of faultless driving, starting from September 1 for those with clean records. Demerit points are reduced after 12 months of faultless driving following the last demerit.
A merit system cuts demerit points after 12 months of faultless driving with scales from four to one, ten to six, 20 to 13, and 30 to 18. Other demerits clear on a sliding scale, with 30 lasting years. It does not cut Autopac premiums or license fees. A $100 surcharge applies at six demerits, rising to $350 at 20 or more. Applies only to active licenses, not lapsed ones.
In memoriam notices for Linton Burl a Douse Dunlop and family members mark anniversaries and years since passing. Messages express eternal memory and love from spouses children and siblings across May and June dates.
