Don’t graze too early warn forage experts
Farmers should delay spring grazing until pastures reach the four leaf stage or are six to eight inches tall. With high legume content grazing should wait until eight to twelve inches, and native range should not be grazed before the third leaf stage. Forage needs a month of rest to regrow and replenish nutrients.
Pasture Grazing and Rest Strategies for Cattle
Authorities advise leaving 2 to 6 inches of residue to maximize photosynthesis and root reserves. Move cattle based on forage growth, with spring rotations every four days or less and six to eight inch pasture height, then ease as growth slows. Avoid overgrazing by allowing recovery 10 to 14 days, or rest areas and use supplements such as range cubes or hay to maintain animal gains and reduce costs.
