A local cemetery committee laments insufficient funds to pay a caretaker and maintain graves. They announce a meeting to discuss fundraising and plans to preserve the cemetery with community support and civic duty.
The Ladies Aid of Bt. Matthews Lutheran Church met May 5 at Mrs. Julius Otke's home with seven members and two visitors. Rev P Borchardt led prayer and study. Mrs. Andres presided. They plan a supper for the Walther League Rally in Roblin May 22, with committees led by Mrs. Orke and Mrs. Andres. A bake sale for Hospital Aid S28 was approved. meeting closed with a hymn and benediction.
The Federal Department of Health approved a $192,2200 grant for renovations and a new wing at Dauphin General Hospital. The plan adds active treatment beds and diagnostic Moor Space, with modernization to integrate the new wing. Completion is anticipated by October 1961, with funds released in quarterly instalments as milestones are met.
The Sixth Regional Meeting of Hospital Auxiliaries convened in Gilbert Plains on Thursday May 12 at 2 p.m. Fifty four members from Dauphin Benito Gilbert Plains McCreary Swan River Ste. Rose du Lac Grandview Roblin attended. Provincial President Miss Macleod spoke urging continued volunteer work and hospital board engagement. A lunch followed hosted by Gilbert Plains ladies.
Friends gathered for a farewell party honoring Dr. and Mrs. George Korwan and Angela on Friday May 13 in Roblin. The trio, residents for three years, will move to Montreal for further study. Jim Hilland presented a gift and well wishes as a buffet supper closed the social evening.
Four hundred seventy two people gathered at Kamsack Collegiate Auditorium for a public talk on Finding Peace In This Troubled World by district Supervisor W. R. Duncombe. He linked peace to a world authority of Jehovah’s Kingdom and cited disarmament talks and Lord Hailsham’s view. Sigurd Olsen noted Roblin Congregation members completing ministerial training in Kamsack.
Cromarty 4-H Club met May 5 at 8 p.m. in Cromarty School House with President Ron Orke presiding. The calf project will hold Achievement Day on June 3. No meetings are planned for June or July. After films by Mr Robin Watson, lunch was served.
New pamphlets on weed control in vegetable crops lawns and special crops are available free of charge from the Department of Agriculture. The guides cover herbicides and rates for major crops, lawn use, cultural and chemical methods for sunflowers corn field peas rapeseed and soybeans with pre seeding post seeding and post emergence options and are available from agricultural representatives or the Publications Branch 169 Legislative Building Winnipeg.
Dorothy Barker recalls a return trip to Toronto where she waits alone at the marble vaulted terminal after misplacing timing and funds. Immigrant crowds, a playful boy at a coin-operated driving machine, and a relieved reunion with Susan Janet and Ricky follow as daylight saving confusion delays her family's greeting.
Mrs. C McCrea and others attended the Hospital Regional Meeting in Gilbert Plains on May 12. Lydia E Miller was reelected president of the North West region of Women’s Hospital Auxiliaries at the one day convention in Gilbert Plains. Roblin attendees joined Presbyterial in Dauphin last weekend. Dr A F Ferre and daughter Dianne moved to Roblin on May 14 from Elkhorn where he practiced. The Ferres’ new office is in the former Dr Large building. Lydia Miller reported hope for a doctor in Birch River by July.
Dauphin Fat Stock Show featured nine clubs from Ste. Rose, Dauphin, and Roblin areas with top honors in inter club events. Awards went to Edwin Bailes and Garry Digby with multiple red and blue ribbons. Inter-District 4-H Public Speaking set for May 25 at Roblin Collegiate, with winners advancing to Winnipeg semi finals in July.
The Knox United Church WMS met at Mrs. R McBain's home on Tuesday at 3 pm with Mrs. H Cross leading a service themed Let the hills sing for joy together. Minutes from March and Easter offering approved, plans made to attend Presbyterial in Dauphin, ten members present, social hour followed.
The Ladies Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion met in Roblin on May 10 with 21 members present. Reports from committees were given and plans made to attend the Winnipegosis Rally on May 30, possibly in two or three cars. Delegates named were Mrs Stephaniuk and Mrs Curle. Next meeting set for June 14 with lunch provided by Mrs Beerman, Mrs Hutchison, Mrs Harlow, and Mrs Yeo.
The Tummel Ladies Club met at Mrs Jo Alexander's home with seven members and two visitors. After roll call they exchanged plant slips and addressed old and new business. The secretary was authorized to purchase a coffee percolator at Mrs Mryt Lamb's home. The meeting ended with the Lord's Prayer and a luncheon. Regular checkups for those over forty could help detect cancers early.
Funeral services were held at San Clara Roman Catholic Church for Jack Morresseau aged 83 who died May 11 1960 at his Boggy Creek home after a short illness. Rev Dansereau officiated with Sneath Funeral Service arranging. Interment followed in Parish cemetery. Surviving are three sons Bill Arthur Justin and three daughters Agnes Lena and Bul.
Manitoba Branch of the Canadian Postmasters Association holds its annual conference at Prince Edward Hotel Brandon May 18 19 20. Attendees include Mr Wo Wilson director of operations and Mr Archibald president, with district officials from Winnipeg. two banquets and social events planned by Eaton Simpson Sears and Brandon Chamber of Commerce.
On Monday May 16 in the Tummel District at Eugene Bramwell's farm twelve neighbours moved in about $65 000 worth of machinery and cultivated roughly 150 to 155 acres of wheat in eight hours. Organized by Billy Keay the participants included Bill Burla Neil Burla Pete Galatiuk Nat McKay Don Robin John Craig Bill Craig Gordon McFadyen Keith Alexander Joe Wolowetz Albert McFadyen and Billy Keay. Master Timothy Shawn Conlin won a Silver Cup and $100 on Swift's Money Man program. The Roblin golf course project progresses with many locals clearing stones and prepping for oats and grass sowing while hopes rise for a September opening.
Mary Spani daughter of Mrs. Alex Ritchie Roblin wed Andrew Walker of Worsley Sask at United Church Sutherland May 13. Ralph Ritchie Roblin gave bride in marriage. Lady wore blue taffeta with lace carried white Bible pink rose buds and white heather. Reception followed. couple plan six week honeymoon in Scotland and England before returning to Wolseley.
