Manitoba will begin a two part trial in September 1964 introducing three new elementary arithmetic series to about 1,600 pupils in 56 classes across grades four to six and an eight grade modern mathematics pilot with 750 students plus 500 in grade nine. The pilot emphasizes analytical problem solving over rote rule memorization and uses an equation approach to show relationships. In-service training for about 70 teachers will support the rollout with university led instruction and collaboration between Brandon and Winnipeg staff. If successful, new texts and methods could be adopted province wide in September 1965.
