Minister Comments on Alsands Suspension
The Honourable Marc Lalonde said the Alsands suspension shifts Canada toward Beaufort Sea and Atlantic offshore oil prospects and expanded western crude development. Private firms pulled out despite a government offer to share risk while keeping 50 percent private ownership. Canada and Alberta would cover 84 percent of the $13.9 billion project cost through a tax exempt stand alone corporation until repayment.
