Legion Ambulance Proves Its Worth

The Russell Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion funded an ambulance service after appealing to local governments for help. Each granted 800 dollars, with the balance raised by the Legion, and the ambulance began operation in August 1960. Since then it has made 35 trips to Winnipeg and 60 local trips, reportedly saving at least five lives. The project runs at cost with voluntary drivers and free town housing, offering a model for Roblin communities.
