Manitoba hikes funding for fire fighting programs
The Manitoba government will spend an extra 2 million dollars this year to strengthen forest fire prevention detection and initial attack efforts. The plan adds 80 new seasonal positions, extends 50 staff terms, forms five new five member helicopter crews, dispatches 25 initial attack specialists, and expands Fire Ranger presence. A provincial first Bird Dog system will coordinate air support and water bombing. Last year fires burned 7.6 million acres, costing 68 million in suppression and 17 million in evacuations. Officials express cautious optimism about this season despite dry areas in the south Whiteshell and western region.
