Amid national outrage over Revenue Canada tax quotas and harsh collection practices, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business voices criticism of the system and calls for reforms to reduce injustice and improve understanding for taxpayers.
Federation president John Bulloch leads a push for checks and balances in taxation arguing assessors rely on Revenue Canada guidelines and many cases are needlessly costly. The CFIB proposes taxpayer protections and cost-shifting to deter poor assessor work. A current program offers $1000 for successful court wins, but Bulloch says cases can cost $3000–$4000 and appeals remain rare.
Eye Donor Week runs April 1 to 7 to urge pledges to the Lions Eye Bank and raise sight program awareness. More than 100 await corneal grafts. over 60 gained sight through surgery in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Money supports The Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba providing rehabilitation services for physically disabled children including medical assessment prosthetic supplies transportation psychological testing special education summer camping social services and therapy services.
Gloria Cameron of Grandview appeared in court March 21 over a separate incident dated December 5, 1983. Cameron was charged with driving a school bus without a valid Manitoba driver's license at the time.
