Where Do Weeds Come From In Canada
This article explains how weeds arrived with homesteaders and pioneers bringing seed and crops to Canada. It notes 60 percent of weeds are introduced species, naming wild oats, wild buckwheat, lady's thumb, lamb's quarters, cow cockle, stinkweed and others, with many native weeds also listed. Minister Backs March Is Good Seed Month Campaign
Provincial Agriculture Minister Samuel Askiw announced full support for the March Is Good Seed Month campaign by the Canadian Seed Growers Association and urged Manitoba farmers to use top quality certified seed for the 1972 crop. He emphasized certified rapeseed for those switching from erucic to low erucic acid varieties and noted guaranteed germination. Farmers buying certified seed were urged to use the over quota delivery privilege. He argued that investing in high quality seed complements weed control, fertilization, and tillage efforts.
