Centennial telephone whist to aid Roblin project

Roblin and District Horticultural Society plans a giant Telephone Whist on Friday April 7 to raise funds for the Centennial. Admission 50 cents, 8 p.m. start, 24 hands per game, prizes for male and female winners plus consolation prizes. Proceeds go to the Central Centennial Committee via the horticultural main committee.

Death of Georges P. Vanier Governor General at 78

Georges Philippe Vanier, governor general of Canada since 1959, died peacefully at Government House on Sunday March Sth 1967 from heart failure at age 78. A WWI hero, lawyer and diplomat, he led wartime Quebec forces and evacution of France. A state funeral was held in Ottawa, with a memorial service in St Boniface Basilica Manitoba.

Goose Lake School Board approves four extra classrooms

At its March 1 meeting the Goose Lake School Board received a letter from the Minister of Education approving the additional four classrooms. The plan shifts the space to the main floor for multi purpose use including a lunch area. Land acquisition and exact site will be decided at the next meeting.

Collegiate Capers at Portage La Prairie Championship

The Senior Girls of Roblin represented Zone 8 at the provincial basketball championship in Portage la Prairie on March 3 and 4. They defeated Flin Flon 54 to 19 in their first game, then lost to Miles Macdonell 24 to 14 after leading at three-quarter time. The team and cheerleaders, guided by Coach McDonald, Mr. Yeo, and Mrs. Burelle, earned praise for sportsmanship and teamwork. Miles Macdonell won the title, with Roblin memories of the event lasting beyond the court.

Paintings On Display At Roblin Collegiate

The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s travelling exhibition Russian Icons features twenty four panel paintings from the Russian Church spanning the 10th to 16th centuries. It will be shown at Roblin Collegiate from March 16 to April 13.

St. Vlad's Hockey Tournament Ends With Ties and Wins

A small crowd watched St. Vlad's hold a Saturday hockey tournament at St. Vladimir's College. Results: St. Vlad's 6 Grandview 2. Dauphin 5 Inglis 4. Dauphin 7 Grandview 1. St. Vlad's 2 Inglis 2. The final game ended in a 2-2 tie after three periods. Visiting teams were treated to lunch after the games.

Roblin Musical Group Elects Officers at Annual Meeting

The Roblin Community Musical Group elected officers at its February 20 meeting. President J Ziprick, Vice-President W Doering, Secretary Miss Marie Campbell, Treasurer Mrs Helen Gallant. The group prepares for an Interfaith Service in Roblin later this month. singer appeal has been modest but preparations continue.

Diane Radford Crowned Makaroff Carnival Queen

The Makaroff Ice Carnival on March 4 crowned Diane Radford as Queen with Barbara Boyce and Diane Dixon as attendants. Skaters, clowns, solos by Mona Leung and others, and baton twirlers from San Clara highlighted a windswept program. Ticket sales reached 161.15 with Donald Zimmer winning a door prize.

Mrs Ed Waggoner and Mrs Harold Howe visited Nora Cross in Dauphin Hospital on Tuesday last week. Family night at Roblin Free Methodist Church drew distant guests from Grandview. Lorne Nicholson home hosted H Oliphant Bob and Donna Shymko and family. Nora Cross again visited in Dauphin Hospital on Sunday. Success is the harvest of enthusiasm and endeavour, motivation is the seed.

The Roblin Hospital District No. 2 board met on Tuesday February 28 at 3 00 pm. Minutes of the prior meeting were adopted. Reports covered finances rubber baseboard tender and repairs, no parking signage and doctor access, a canopy over lab stairs, and purchase of a pulse monitor ECG and oscilloscope for 790 dollars. A hot water tank leak was repaired temporarily and a new tank ordered.

Roblin Agricultural Society directors met twice to plan Roblin’s 50th annual fair set for Friday July 14 1967. The prize list will include two Centennial classes and new sections for non exhibitors. An afternoon on baking and canning problems led by Mrs Ed Somers of Winnipeg is planned.
