Pension Bill proposes five dollar monthly increase

Parliament Hill reports the Old Age Pension Act amendment would raise the monthly pension to 30 dollars in most provinces with the federal share at three quarters of that amount. The bill also lifts the income limit to 600 dollars yearly and shifts provincial costs for health care where available. Opponents critique delayed action and low totals while supporters cite long advocacy by the CCF and social reformers. About 200 000 people attended Ottawa's Marian Congress, the continent’s largest four day event.
