Manitoba Telephone System asks the Public Utilities Board to set a new long distance rate schedule for calls from midnight to 6 am on weekdays and all day Sunday. The plan caps a three minute Manitoba to Manitoba call at 65 cents and targets direct distance dialing and certain operator assisted or handicapped users. Rates would drop 5 to 30 cents on qualifying routes over 46 miles, with examples Winnipeg to Brandon and Dauphin to Flin Flon. The board filing states the goal is to encourage self service and use of automated systems during low traffic periods.
