Province approves rural focus in medical education plan
Manitoba will train more doctors in Brandon and other rural communities after approving all recommendations of a medical education study. Six family medicine residencies are created this year in Brandon, Steinbach, and Morden Winkler, part of a drive to ensure access to a family doctor by 2015. The plan includes rural post graduate training, community campuses for third and fourth year students, and consideration of new medical school seats as satellite campuses. A rural medical education working group will support implementation with the University of Manitoba, Brandon University, and other partners.
