Where Is Mitchell In Manitoba Farm History

Editorial recalls James Mitchell who moved from Scotland to Assiniboine River Valley near Roblin and established Hermitage Farm. His descendants lived there until the land was bought by the Manitoba Government for flood control reservoir projects tied to the Shellmouth dam and Lake of the Prairies.

Mitchell Homestead Named for Cottage Area Losses

The flood control project submerged 19 valley quarters and forced relocation of farm buildings. The Mitchell homestead, built around 1890, was burned as part of the retreat from the rising Assiniboine downstream area. A cottage site is planned with August 8 draw for lots, but no sign honors the Mitchell family. Residents downstream and upstream were displaced and many farms disappeared under water. Mitchell Park or Mitchell Drive should memorialize the family.
