Canada’s May forest fire activity was low relative to averages, with 1,646 fires burning 20,000 hectares. For the season to date 1,792 fires affected 20,000 hectares, against 1977 figures of 3,270 fires and 157,000 hectares.
Nearly 100 senior 4-H club members will travel out of province this summer on trips funded by the Manitoba Club Council and partners. Recipients include John Hunter of Roblin to British Columbia, David Keneka of Roblin to Minnesota, and Murray Roe of MacNutt with Brian Digby of Dropmore to Iowa.
MI C E Brumwell wins $50 in this week’s Kinsmen 400 Club draw. Brumwell’s prize is awarded as part of the local fraternal organization’s weekly fundraiser.
The report notes Esterhazy winning a set of speakers and an SWR meter. Ralph Beattie of Roblin and Marg Shoplan of Rocanville won horseshoe, edging Cicil Hall of Moosomin and Robert Moshondz of Russell in the finals. Eileen Heap of Russell delivered the heaviest accurate throw.
The event featured a hammer throw contest with Gwen Cook of Moosomin second, kiddies races with prizes, mixed ball games, and a Saskatchewan Manitoba tug of war won by Saskatchewan. Children enjoyed playground equipment and swimming at the beach. Attendance was down slightly but praised for organization. Border Buddies C B Club thanks Welwyn District and Fort Ellice Hotel St Lazare for hospitality and Roy Kerman for meadow work. The club invites new members as its total reaches 468.
