Why Earthworms Surfacing in Rainy Weather
Weather prompts earthworms to emerge on sidewalks as moisture helps them breathe through their skin. Researchers offer one theory that soil moisture is needed for respiration, while worms can survive days submerged.
Earthworms Surface During Rain and Teachability
Neighbourly earthworms surface in rain to migrate and escape predators like moles. They improve soil fertility by ingesting and digesting organic matter and casting nutrients. A University of Michigan study showed trained earthworms navigate mazes and even regenerate parts, implying memory-like learning, though sun forces them back underground when dry.
