Mystery bells found by rural residents and owned by Hugh Armstrong of Vista were identified as Swiss cow bells listed in a 1902 Sears Roebuck catalog. Dated 1878 and stamped with salignelegier, they circulated widely from 33 cents to 1.44 dollars and later appeared in Louisiana and Oregon as livestock bells.
