Shell River Council Sets 1971 Committees And Budgets

Shell River Rural Municipality appoints 1971 committees with Irwin Edel as Deputy Reeve and sets operating and capital estimates totaling 190,500 dollars for the year. It approves by laws on office staff, solicitor, planning scheme, and indemnities, plus wage guarantees for two grader operators. Regular meetings scheduled for the 2nd Tuesday each month.

Bantam Mustangs Split Two Games With Close Win

The Bantam Mustangs won 8-6 in an exhibition at Grandview on January 19 after overcoming a 6-6 tie, with goals by Bruce Andres Ken Holovach Cliff Pomedli Mervin Doering Pat Bazan Tom Cockerill and Colin Ritchie. They face MAHA playoffs pending approval for two pickups from Grandview, Ron Bomak and Len Rubeniuk, likely to play against Swan River and Flin Flon Bantam Bombers.

Air Cadets Parade In Blizzard Conditions

Thirty seven cadets three officers one instructor and three visitors attended a Tuesday January 19 parade under near blizzard conditions. Captain Paul Galatink led the event with Hans Maurer and Lt. Graham Galatiuk assisting. instructor Constable Busch present. Dennis Ziprick won best turned out cadet earning a lanyard and a 1600 dollar bill. Also planned were First Aid and drill sessions and a drill team training. An inter-squadron bonspiel for 32 ranks will be held February 6 and 7 at Russell Rink with eighteen squadrons from Manitoba and Saskatchewan invited.

Local Nurses Graduate During St. Boniface 100th Birthday

Ninety eight graduates from St. Boniface General Hospital School of Nursing received diplomas and pins at a graduation ceremony in the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall. Rene Toupin, the Minister of Health and Social Services, lit one of a hundred centennial candles as the hospital marks its 100th year since 1871.

Recreation Committee Elects Officers for 1971 in Roblin Shell

The Roblin-Shell River-Hillsburg Recreation Committee met January 20 at the Shell River office to elect officers for 1971. W. E. Nash became Chairman N. Yakimishyn Vice-Chairman Mrs C Cranwell Treasurer. Grants approved include Minor Hockey 300 Kiddies Arena 300 Band 300 Festival 150 Junior Curlers 50 and Boy Scouts 100. On January 19 Mr and Mrs George Giles hosted a tea for the retirement of Japanese Consul General Tomohiko Hayashi and Mrs Hayashi who left Canada January 23 for Japan.

Transportation Building Opens in Roblin Bus Facility Inaugurated

Roblin mayor Newton cuts the ribbon for the new Intermountain Transportation Building on Monday January 18 1971. Walter Maksymetz chairing the board welcomes guests and outlines the project scope noting a 50 by 74 by 16 foot structure with two service bays a lube bay an office a drivers lounge washrooms and two storage rooms. Construction began in May with Central Canadian Structures Limited as contractor and several local firms cited. Total cost includes building 33992 land 2500 fence 3058 and wiring 2000 with viewing invites to staff and public.

Rink Corner updates on Roblin Flin Flon arena progress

Sam Fitkowski reports the new arena ice is ready for skating and hockey. Lighting is hoped to be installed by Saturday for the Roblin juveniles versus Flin Flon game. The SALT group concert and dance raise funds for the rink while an ice carnival is planned for March. Free skating may be offered later to thank donors.

Seven members attended the Deepdale Ladies Aid annual meeting on January 14 at Mrs. C. Ayer’s home. Officers were reappointed by acclamation: Mrs. C. Powell President, Mrs. C. Ayer Vice President, Mrs. C. McKenzie Secretary Treasurer. The 1970 financial balance was $79.56. A Bakeless Bake Sale was approved and the traveling basket to resume. A new member, Mrs. M.
