A nostalgic note on hockey as the national sport, recalling farm life shinny games. Boys used home made sticks from willow and twisted roots, with packs supplied by horses. The piece mentions improvised rules for shinny and a flexible game format.
In Saskatoon the first Western Canadian Oldtimers hockey tournament drew 44 teams and over 1000 players including farmers, doctors, lawyers, and tradesmen. Players aged about 42, many with improvised gear, played on snow surfaces with strict rules and friendly sportsmanship. Regina will host next year with as many as ninety teams expected.
Manitoba crop and livestock producers start a series of mini outlook meetings on January 26 in Beausejour. Economists from the Manitoba Marketing Board will summarize crop and livestock prospects for 1977 from Prospect 77. Meetings across the province are open to the public with details via local Department of Agriculture offices. In this area Roblin February 9 at 1 00 p.m. and Russell February 10 at 1 00 p.m.
