The Manitoba economy rose 2.9 percent in 2005 as consumer spending and construction surged. Labour income may hit a record $21 billion, profits grow double digits, and exports gain 4.1 percent led by energy while durable goods rise 10 percent and retail sales increase 6.5 percent.
The Westman Media Cooperative Ltd named its 2006 board at the AGM. New directors are Doug Smallwood Bill Zaporzan and Scott Gervin. Lorne Boguski was elected Chair with Don Bernhardt First Vice Chair Susan Brechmann Second Vice Chair Miriam McLeod Secretary and Scott Gervin Treasurer. Rick Borotsik Theresa van Hoof and Chris Heywood complete the list. Boguski said diversification has solidified the cooperative in western Manitoba’s communications sector and that board decisions will reflect core values of the cooperative and its members.
The Village of St Lazare stays under a boil water advisory issued by Manitoba Health after an early December test detected E coli. A door to door notice informed residents and further testing shows improvement but the advisory continues until an engineering assessment is completed.
Boissevain Doric Lodge sponsors a beard and mustache growing contest during the Homegrown Reunion set for July 28 to 30. Registrations began January 3 with about 15 men already growing. The competition offers 17 categories.
Glen Cummings challenged the Doer government to provide provincial funding for Natural Prairie's proposed beef slaughter plant at Neepawa. The Manitoba company now ships cattle to Saskatchewan for processing and seeks a second plant. Cummings spoke at the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association annual meeting.

Three people faced charges after an armed home invasion on 4th Ave Southwest in Dauphin. A group confronted the residents, one member armed with a gun. Two Dauphin men and a Winnipeg youth were arrested within an hour. a sawed off shotgun was recovered. All remained in custody.
A 15 year old youth who attended a farm party south of Langenburg remains in hospital after frostbite damage near Christmas. He is scheduled for left hand finger amputation following a struggle at the party, his walk home, and discovery by a passing health centre worker at 6 30 a m in an open field.
