Winter Feed Requirements of Beef Cows
Canadian beef cattle studies at Brandon Manitoba and Manyberries Alberta show NRC energy standards are underestimating winter needs. Cows lose weight and condition on NRC levels, delaying conception. Energy inputs must exceed NRC by 7-10 percent at Brandon and 35-40 percent at Manyberries to restore body weight. Large breed crosses then show higher conception and calf weights, with Simmental x Angus at Brandon and Charolais x Angus at Manyberries identified as most efficient crosses.
