January is Ability Fund month in Manitoba. The Ability Fund is administered by The Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba and was formerly known as the March of Dimes.
The Ability Fund runs each January across Manitoba except where local United Appeals fund it. Areas excluded include Altona Carmen Gimli Minnedosa Morden Neepawa Pierson Pine Falls Portage la Prairie Reston Steinbach Winkler and Winnipeg. Funds support rehabilitation services for physically disabled adults. by March 31 1977 the provincial adult caseload reached 5674.
The Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba offers social work counselling group therapy vocational assessment and training employment guidance prosthetic aids transportation and other services. Social workers in urban and rural Manitoba coordinate plans with clients from referral to closure to improve daily living and independence.
Roblin residents celebrate Mrs Elizabeth Laforte turning 96 on Sunday December 31 1978 with greetings and well wishes from family and friends in a community note.
Over 170 people packed Merridale School for a Christmas concert recalling country school days. The program featured plays solos duets and group singing from five to eighty one year olds with Santa visiting and a 4-H Garden Club pageant finale. Proceeds funded school expenses amid community participation.
The Zorra Ladies’ Aid, with sixteen members, met twelve regular and two special times in the church basement in 1978. Led by Rev. Paul Borchardt, they supported church and missions, sent care cards, and carried out yearly events from officer elections to 70th anniversary preparations, weddings, funerals, and donations to hospital and church projects.
A Merridale Community Club report notes a crowd of 25 attended a New Years Eve supper at Calvin and Gladys Ludwig's home. Guests included Robert and Rose, among others.

Ottawa notes forest fires in 1978 caused damage far below last year and the decade average. From April 1 to October 31, 7,724 fires affected about 250000 hectares, against 8702 fires and 1038000 hectares the prior year and 8590 fires and 1107000 hectares as the ten year average.
Environment Canada Forest Fire Research Institute in Ottawa reports 617 fires burning 39 000 hectares across Canada in Septem ber and October, below last year’s 330 fires and 38 000 hectares and under the decade averages of 857 fires and 51 000 hectares for 1968 1977.
