Saint Boniface Basilica Mirrors Early Red River Faith
The canoe brigade from Montreal brought Joseph Norbert Provencher to Red River on July 16 1838 to establish Western Canada’s first Roman Catholic mission. He built a small church and school on land granted by Lord Selkirk and completed a chapel in 1820 followed by a stone cathedral with two turrets later celebrated in Whittier's The Red River Voyageur. The basilica now dominates the river with roots tracing to 1908 and nearby Grey Nuns House from 1845 as one of Western Canada’s oldest structures.
