Four Roblin rinks attended the Grandview Spiel last week and enjoyed the outing. Weather kept crowds scarce but all returned safely. Graham Mitchell’s rink won second in the Merchant event while Geo Aitken’s team placed third in the Sandy. Newton and Haines rink also competed.
Hon. D. L. Campbell announces three new Manitoba Power Commission appointees. Robert C. Smellie of Russell will serve as Chairman, John J. Kelly of Winnipeg as Vice-Chairman, and Gerald F. Habing of Hazelridge as member. P. A. Kennedy of Brandon remains on the commission. Smellie is a WWI veteran and dairy industry manager. Kelly is a Winnipeg lawyer. Habing is a Hazelridge farmer and director of Manitoba Co-operative Honey Producers.
The 1947 Portage Mutual annual meeting reports a cash surplus surpassing one million dollars and notes $148,172,204 fire insurance in force plus $4,535,417 windstorm coverage. Policyholders hear of premium note growth, steady 20 percent levy, and a surplus rise to $1,003,391.16 with assets at $1,790,58.42.
Roblin's 29th Annual bonspiel began at Roblin's new skating and cutting rinks with nine sheets of ice. At 2 p.m. on Monday February 23 1914 Jim McConnell president of Roblin Club threw the ceremonial first stone. The event drew 28 local rinks and 18 visiting rinks with keen competition and several upsets reported as play started. Visiting teams include Binscorth McCaig Russell Burgess Leifer Thom Inglis H Liske A Ziprick Peter Craig Tom Jackson Benito Bev Abigail and others along with a list of local entrants.
Chester Bowles, former CPA head and now UN Appeal for Children advisory chair, reports from Europe on relief conditions. He says hunger in Europe is used as a political tool by East and West, with aid rewarding friends and punishing opponents. He urges support for the UN appeal for ten million in Canada, sixty million in the U.S., and local church clothing drives to end this exploitation.
