Manitoba to join International Registration Plan in 2001

Manitoba will join the International Registration Plan on March 1 next year, joining the US states and three other Canadian provinces to share commercial vehicle registration fees and road use taxes. The move aims to streamline cross border registrations for drivers, with all provinces targeting IRP by summer 2001. Manitoba officials say the program makes the province a competitive base for transport, allowing carriers to register in their origin jurisdiction and receive unified plates and cab cards listing permitted weights.

Manitoba IRP to replace duplicate trucking registrations

Roblin Area forecasts describe the IRP plan replacing per jurisdiction registration fees for Manitoba and American carriers. Manitoba’s involvement eliminates vehicle registrations and trip permits across states, aiding competitiveness. Ashton notes Manitoba exported over 8 billion dollars in 1998 with 6.2 billion to NAFTA partners moved by truck, and IRP will help provincially based carriers stay competitive and secure inter jurisdictional fee shares.
