Ancient Rome marked February 14 as the start of mating season for birds and spring, a love festival to Lupercus and Juno. Unmarried women dropped name cards in urns for a year’s blind date, birthing Valentnes cards. The church Christianized the date, with martyrs named Valentine. Valentines evolved from handmade cards to published verse books in the 18th and 19th centuries.
