Heroic British Major Hoey Dies in Burma Charge

Major Charles Ferguson Hoey of Duncan Vancouver Island died at 30 during a bold assault on a Jop-held hill in Burma. He posthumously received the Victoria Cross for gallantry after seizing a Bren gun, leading his men under heavy fire despite multiple wounds. Earlier, he earned the Military Cross for a raid in Maungdaw and had been mentioned in despatches. He was educated in Duncan and trained at Sandhurst after commissioning into the Lincolnshire Regiment.
