District News reports on a group of street ladies presenting a quilting program for 1956. Members from Gresden and nearby areas gathered at Rebun and Ares D605 for a time of sewing and socializing. Mrs H Tot welcomed attendees as part of the Valentine Verse program.
A brief note records a visitor at Deepdale who stayed with Mrs M for several days. The document mentions Mrs PB returning home and a man spending two weeks in Winn pez during the visit.
Recruits swarmed into the army for a two month basic course at Fort Osborne Barracks Winnipeg. About 60 percent hailed from Saskatchewan 30 percent from Manitoba and the rest from north west Ontario. Aged men from rural areas entered while some returned to civilian life after training. The intake was the first of its kind in Canada and examined by officers from multiple cities. Majority are young single men with no prior army experience. Some will join regular forces after training. Pay includes recruit wages 92 dollars monthly plus board lodging and 76 dollars more if married. Also notes health, dental checks and attrition from the intake.
Roblin United Church officials met last week with attendees including J Beerman J Ward H Ayer and E McIntyre. Deepdale Ladies Aid and Deepdale W I held January meetings with officer elections and gifts to the organist Mrs McIntyre. Upcoming events include February visits and a potential 4H Garden Club sponsorship, with guest lists and a scrabble contest concluding with a luncheon.
The Student Council event yielded modest takings but a good time for attendees. Whist winners include Ladies first Mrs O Boyce and Gents first Johnny Hohle with Pauline Zankowski and T Duffy as consolation winners. Lyle Beattie won the door prize. Roblin High School Bonspiel saw a rink led by Leonard Nabe Cedric Van Drecht Audrey Davis and Edith Duffy place second in the opening event. Congratulations to Mrs J Grundy for her 89th birthday on January 31 and to Mrs A Taylor on her 77th birthday January 28.
February 9 welcomes everyone to a note about funding and memory tied to polls and civic engagement. The fragment references firms, an election context, and a general call to participation.
The regular Hospital Aide meeting will be held on Tuesday February 7 at 2:30 PM. Members are urged to attend as plans for upcoming charity events and hospital support programs will be discussed.
