The year 2005 brings centennial celebrations for Alberta and Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan plans a bell ringing at noon on New Year’s Day, while Alberta hosts a September reenactment with various events. Residents reflect on resolutions and new beginnings as the calendar turns.
The piece surveys New Year traditions from Spain to Japan. It notes Spain’s grape ritual for luck, China’s fireworks and lanterns, Denmark’s door banging, France’s pancake breakfast, Greece’s gifts, Italy’s oranges, Argentina’s street celebrations, Ireland’s door trick, and Japan’s 108 gongs to cleanse sins. It ends with wishes for health happiness and success.
In the final 2004 issue the editor extends thanks to a long list of readers who wrote letters this year. Names span Roblin and Manitoba connections, with mentions of local officials groups and sponsors. The note closes with optimism for more acknowledgments in 2005.
