A survey of global Christmas traditions links the tree from Germany to Luther and notes chains of customs across Europe and beyond. It highlights trees on Christmas, gift ships from the Holy Land era, cattle on Christmas Eve, and enduring carols and caroling as universal symbols of joy.
They had little entertainment then yet high spirits and resourcefulness. The new train or doll given by Santa was valued as a priceless jewel. Christmas has changed in many ways for Americans but remains a broadly similar celebration.
In early pioneer days American Indians invited children to view gifts on a sacred spring festival tree called Grandmother. Tribes planted cedar by the medicine lodge, hung moccasins pelts and shawls on its branches, and uprooted Grandmother for a final journey to the Great Beyond. The white Christmas was seen as The Big Eating by some, and Kissing Day byFrench-trader districts.
Nostalgic memories of Christmas past describe cozy family scenes by the fire, Bible Nativity readings, homemade decorations, pop corn stringing, stockings, carolers on sleighs, hot chocolate, and church services on Christmas morning.
The day featured a grand Christmas dinner with roast turkey and mincemeat pie. Afterward children likely skated on a frozen creek and sledded down a nearby hill, enjoying winter activities with new ice skates.
