Manitoba Conservatives Abolish Estate Tax and Cut Income Tax

The new Manitoba government under Premier Sterling Lyon moved quickly in its first session, abolishing succession duties and the mineral acreage tax, and announcing a two point cut in personal and small corporation income taxes for 1978. The move drew mixed reactions as analysts noted modest savings for families while opponents questioned broader benefits. The session ran 13 days from November 24, costing $126,490, with 57 MLAs receiving salaries and expenses.
