Tougher penalties for impaired driving under Safer Roads Act
The Safer Roads Act takes effect December 1 and imposes tougher penalties for impaired driving. First offenses with BAC .05 to .08 or drug impairment trigger a three day licence suspension, seven days if a youth under 16 is present. Registrations must be notified for serious offences and ignition interlock devices become mandatory upon licence reinstatement. Attorney General Gord Mackintosh says the measure strengthens consequences for high risk drivers.
