Bale grazing benefits for cattle in Manitoba winters
You and your cattle can benefit from bale grazing. Bale grazing beef cattle during Manitoba's long winters has the potential to save producers time, effort and money while reducing environmental risk. Bale grazing is the practice of placing larger quantities of bales out for livestock in the fall and regulating the intake of those bales in the winter months using an electric fence. Most bale grazers will move the wire every three to five days and will have a back up lead hot wire to make this easy. Use a good energizer. When choosing your bale grazing site there should be some wind protection for the cattle. The energy requirements of cattle increase dramatically if exposed to the wind during cold weather. The site should have grasses with rhizomatous root systems such as quack grass, smooth brome grass or Kentucky blue grass as the majority of the forage stand. These grasses will grow thru the residue left in the spring better than bunch grasses such as meadow brome and orchard grass.

Bale Grazing Guidelines For Rural Cattle Operations
The report outlines bale grazing practices including bale counts, spacing, and rotation. It covers hay quantity needs for 100 cows at 3 percent body weight, bale weights, and laying out nine 1,300 pound bales for a three day period. It advises water access, snow as fallback, and adjusting rotations in bad weather. It warns about mixing feed and selecting poorer cows.
