Canadians back relief for Britain as the United Emergency Fund for Britain reduces transport costs and purchases scarce goods at lower prices. Sir Ellsworth Flavelle, national chairman, notes the effort complements government aid and aims to deliver more food and goods for the same money to Britons enduring austerity.
Seven films were viewed by a representative audience in the United Church basement on Monday. The program featured The Centre Worries Away Canadian Wheat Story Hot Ice Why Won t Tommy Eat Vitamin TD and Men of Lunenburg. The meeting announced a regular film program and introduced new titles including Ballot Boxes Prairie Gold Properties of Water When Do We Eat Power and the Land Some Like It Rough and The House I Live In as a highlighted offering. The Roblin CCF unit met at George Helliwell's home on November 3 with plans for a dance at Tummer Hall on November 12. A second meeting at Miss Arnott's on November 17 featured a debate on whether party politics have a definite place in provincial politics with Miss Wally and Mr Kendrick endorsing the affirmative and Mrs Cryderman and Mr Perchaluk the negative.
Carnival and booster night kick off the rink’s second season on Friday December 10 with seven costume prizes for adults and children. The High School Relay features teams from Russell Grandview Gilbert Plains and Roblin, with a pennant and team prizes. Broomball pits Roblin Rabbits Makinaff Mastodons and Tumme l Tigers. proceeds aid Boys’ Work. Tickets available from the boys Taylor’s Hardware Mitchell’s Drug Store or Newton’s Groceteria.
Manitoba will reuse the 1948 yellow and black plates in 1949 with a small aluminum plate bearing 49 in the lower right corner. The change aims to simplify registration and aid law enforcement. Steel shortages prevent a return to two-plate cars. The Ladies Aid Bazaar at United Church basement on Saturday December 4 opens at 3 p.m.
Five years ago on December 5 1943 Canadian First Division troops across the Moro River began an offensive toward Ortona. Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment won a foothold on the north bank, PPCLI scaled the river bank, Pats and 44th Royal Tank Regiment held ground, Seaforth Highlanders crossed toward San Leonardo, and by December 10 the Canadians advanced toward Berardi crossroads as the battle for Ortona commenced.
Roblin Collegiate Football Team defeated Russell High School 2 to 0 at Roblin on Tuesday November 23. Tom Scott and Crest Chick scored the goals. Referee was Geo Souter. A week earlier the teams tied 1 to 1 at Russell after a hard fought match.
In Hillsburg during 1948 the rural municipality paid bounties on 11 bears and 40 coyotes, totaling 900 dollars. The provincial government covered half the bounty cost.
