Research may improve reproductive efficiency in swine
Agriculture Canada's Brandon Research Station reports that higher calcium and phosphorus in gestation diets increase absorption of phosphorus and decrease absorption of manganese copper and zinc by about 30 to 35 percent. The study suggests supplementing trace minerals in high calcium phosphorus gestation rations to avoid deficiencies and support reproductive efficiency in gilts.

Teat number and heritability in swine breeding programs
A Canadian study from the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Brandon reports total teat number averages of 13.6 with heritability around 41 percent across six pig populations. Selection for more teats is feasible while maintaining growth and backfat targets through a combined selection index that screens by teat count. Where two animals share index performance, the one with more teats is preferred.
