Rippling waters and outings tempt city residents to enjoy the countryside. Drivers are urged to keep fires and cigarettes out to prevent forest blazes sparked by human carelessness. Public officials stress responsibility to protect forests and recreation areas this season.
The report notes anglers landing large fish including an 83 lb 9 oz muskie and a 26-pounder near rocks by Athapapuskow Lake. Masters Angler results list EA Sargent of Brainerd with a heavy catch and Ed of Winnipeg securing a notable fish in Sassagnini. Gobeil of St. Vital and Tippett Sr. are also mentioned among prize catches in the Pinawa Channel and Brookie events.
In Gods River Maurice Smith and another angler each weighed five pounds eight ounces and four pounds eleven ounces. A first cast pike vanishes as line breaks. A later bite yields a small pike caught with Len Thompson gear. The author wins a dime from the first fish.
Manitoba has recorded 235 forest fires this season with 96 fires from July 1 to 23. Firefighters totaling 1351 personnel battle blazes in the Thompson area aided by two Canso water bombers, Manitoba Government Air Service aircraft, and three helicopters. Some fires threaten timber but losses remain low. remote fires are fought with float-equipped planes and helicopters.
The Manitoba Telephone System set Sept 1 as the deadline for new member listings in the 1969 Provincial Telephone Directory. Changes should be made at local offices before then. About 189000 directories will be printed, up 7600 from 1968, with the new issue effective in November.
