Disposal of Combine Thresher Stubble and Straw
Experimental Farm notes urge Manitoba farmers to stop burning crop residues after harvest. Soil organic matter has declined from 12 to 18 percent in virgin soils to 1 to 4 percent on grain land over seventy years. Straw spreaders and surface tillage with rotary barrows offer effective alternatives to fire, preventing further soil impoverishment.
