Income tax only part of Canada’s total tax burden
Fraser Institute economists note that income tax payments make up about one third of the total tax bill for a typical Canadian family. Taxes take larger share of income than basics in Canada
A Fraser Institute survey reports the Canadian Consumer Tax Index rising over 45 years. A family earning 63 000 in 2006 paid about 45 percent in taxes, while just over 35 percent went to food clothing and housing. In 1961 taxes consumed 33.5 percent of income. The index covers direct taxes and hidden levies like duties gas and excise taxes.
