Federal Govt Will Carry 582% of Floodway Cost
The 30 mile Red River Floodway is projected to cost about 63 million dollars with the federal government covering around 58 to 84 percent of the expense. The system will divert flood waters above Winnipeg to a channel east of Transcona and back to the river downstream from St. Andrews locks. The floodway channel will move about 60,000 cubic feet of water each second, about a major share of the current dyked river capacity.

Manitoba flood control plan includes Red River Floodway
In 1950 the Red River Valley suffered the costliest flood, inundating 640 square miles north of the border and flooding 8200 Winnipeg homes. The plan proposes Shellmouth reservoir, Portage diversion, and Red River Floodway at a total $83 million, plus smaller structures like St. Malo and Rivers reservoirs to curb spring runoff and extend water storage.
