Draws conducted by people from other districts yielded five $50 bonds and several smaller prizes. top prize went to Viola Bidwell who drew from the audience. Not one winner was present. Jack Gilchrist and James Frame led the event as about 750 paid admissions enjoyed two dances and games. The Virden Nite Hawks provided music at the hall.
City hall hosts activities as Orlo Brown's orchestra performs at the Four Star building. Miners branch Canadian Legion runs games of chance while cars from across the province line the streets with crowds gathered around the venue.
Mrs F Oakley left Monday for Edmonton after visiting relatives in Rivers and Kenton. Emil Krywerki of Vancouver arrived to visit his parents Mr and Mrs George Krywenki. Mrs Charles Blandford left Saturday for Toronto and Windsor where she will visit relatives and friends. FC Walter A Daniel DFC discharged Sept 7 left to attend University of Manitoba. Mr and Mrs George Fraser of Reston are guests of their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs A K MacKay. They returned with Mrs MacKay who had been visiting them. Joyce E Lee daughter of Rev and Mrs F W Lee began home economics course at Manitoba University. Joyce recently won Manitoba scholarship valued at 325 awarded on grades 9, 10 and 11.
PO Don Pike of Winnipeg visits the Hanlons near Rivers. Esme W White, formerly of Rivers Con School staff, takes a similar teaching post at Portage la Prairie public school. G Rowan family from Brandon visit Miss Rowan in Minnesota at the Mowers home. Roy Grant of Union City PA visits his brother Mayor E E Grant in Rivers. he helped lay sidewalks 31 years ago. J W Hanson heads to Kitchen er Ontario for holidays. Cpl Earl Gray returns from overseas and visits his aunt and uncle the Browns. M Zywina of Brandon, formerly Rivers, wins high honors in Brandon horticultural show. Editorial lines urge courage for freedom and reflect on character in life.
We dug and raked and sowed with zeal and pruned till set aseu. We chased the cotworm and sprayed to win. A nervous spud began to turn and slept beside the frame. Our festive plan failed as the regal spud darkened with frost, never reaching the table.
