Rivers Town Council Minutes Open With Tax and ByLaw Actions

The Rivers Town Council met on Wednesday Oct 6 with resolutions approving payments of 1815.76 and 53.00 for accounts and Electric Light respectively. Property on Lot 39 Block 3 to W Harvey for 225.09 and ByLaw 215 ratifying sale to Harvey for 225 were approved as finally read. ByLaw 216 appointing C Blandford as Constable at 25 per month was finalized. All town property to be advertised for sale.

Mr. Chas. A Cooke of Ottawa will perform at Harrow School on Tuesday October 19 at 8 30 p.m under Roseville Church auspices and on Wednesday 20 at Oddfellows Hall Rivers under the W.A. of St. James Church. An Iroquois born in Oka Quebec and former Indian Affairs official, Cooke is a noted vocalist, reader and organizer with a wide career in Ottawa and Ontario clubs and churches.

Elocution Contest Yields Prizes At Oddfellows Hall

Fourteen contestants took part in the Elocution Contest at Oddfellows Hall on Friday evening. Thelma Beach of Daly won the Silver Medal for The Leak in the Dyke. Other prizewinners included Rose Subsky, Hazel Smith, Alice McFadden, and Constance Offen. Music by Hugh Couch and Mrs Patteson drew encores. Mrs H Wareham received a bouquet for four years as accompanist. Judges were Mrs Bertrand Miss Leeman and Mr Jones from Brandon.
