Christmas events and visits noted in Rivers district

Mr and Mrs J Epp and family of Ninga returned home after visiting Mrs H J Wiens. Junior high pupils held a handiwork and painting sale with tea in the legion clubroom on Tuesday. A Sadie Hawkins day dance at Brooke school drew many high school pupils last Friday with representation from surrounding schools. Mr and Mrs J Matthews of Ebor visited Mr and Mrs George Baily recently. Mr and Mrs G Baily were guests at Virden with Mr and Mrs L Thompson.

Bather Foils Thieves At Penmaen Beach Court Freezes Pair

A bather at Penmaen beach spotted two youths acting oddly near his clothes. He found two one pound notes missing and waited in the dunes. After two hours the youths returned in swimsuits and money was recovered hidden in a tree. In magistrates court the 13 year olds faced probation or discharge. The Rocky Mountain strawberry is native to high Rockies plateaus and endures cold arid prairie conditions.

Rivers Kiwanis Charter Night Highlights Dinner Dance

Rivers Kiwanis observed charter night with 106 members plus spouses and guests from Brandon and Souris clubs. The United Church Ladies prepared dinner at the church basement. Don Murdoch of Winnipeg, past Kiwanis International president, spoke, and Mrs Murdoch received flowers. The event closed with a dance at the Ukrainian hall.

Airport Driver in Truck Rodeo Takes Third Place

Winnipeg reports the Canadian army’s top drivers from the prairie command returned to duties after securing second and third in the sixth Canadian truck national rodeo in Toronto. L Cpl G R Thompson of Regina was runner up with 364% points, and Capt E L Kassen of Rivers placed third with 36243 points. The winner was Capt E C Setters of Calgary with 360% points, as drivers maneuvered three tan commercial trucks through an obstacle course sponsored by the Automotive Transport Association of Ontario. Pinkerton’s agency is noted in the text.

Births in Forman's nursing home and Port Arthur hospital

A daughter was born at Forman's nursing home on November 22, 1952. At Port Arthur General Hospital a son was born on November 21, 1962 to Mr and Mrs J P Anteniak nee Betty Robins Lindsay John is the name listed.

Public Cemetery Board Meeting Draws Small Turnout

A sparse crowd attended the annual cemetery board meeting at the Ukrainian hall on Monday evening. Reports outlined yearlong work including a new entrance, stone removal, ground leveling, fence and shrubbery clearance, hedge trimming, equipment shed, added power mower, raised sunken graves, and straightened tombstones. One new member joined the board, Mrs. T. E. Wright.

Old sea wall of Caesar's time found by fishermen

Fishermen dragging nets north of Ravenna Italy reported finding what may be the submerged sea wall that protected Rome's Adriatic fleet. About 100 feet of the ancient stone wall were seen rising through the seabed in 25 feet of water a mile and a half offshore just south of the Po river mouths where imperial Romans are said to have based their fleet. Also noted is a historical aside that Britain taxed its people to provide the queen with pins, giving rise to the term pin money.
