Riots and upheaval mark early settlement era unrest and rebound
Settlers heard of unrest as law breakers clashed with enforcers and Riel became a household name. Women barricaded homes, distrust grew toward local Indians, and a 1885 rebellion prompted men to join in quelling rioters. The Oakleigh area planned refuges, while Samuel McGlinch and A F Robins joined the efforts. The Wellwood Ancrum district saw approval to establish a Protestant school. Daly municipality shuffled clerks and treasurers, with new officers named. A livestock disease struck, triggering compensation measures as horse and cattle losses rose.
