Musicians Win Honors at Brandon and Hamiota Festivals

Rivers drew major attention at the Brandon Musical Festival winning top honors for the Junior Orchestralist and the High School Orchestra. Alex Whyte led entries earned high marks, with principal winners including MecKerzie in Junior G Orchestra and Alvin Sevier in elementary violin. At Hamiota, the Shhon Orchestra claimed first place and a shield. Mrs White, aged 95, received an orchid as a weekly honor from the Winnipes group and was named outstanding Mother of the Province, with a presentation broadcast from Winnipeg.

Rivers Board of Trade Holds Busy Tuesday Session

Rivers Board of Trade met at the Alexandra Hotel on Tuesday evening drawing a large crowd. Pres E. E. Grant led a supper and rounds of business, new members were welcomed, and committees reported on the Royal Visit Rural mail routes and the Sports Day. Letters from G Gardiner and J. E Matthews MP praised wheat price guarantees. The Young People’s Club request for free use of a building was discussed and a committee was appointed. The board congratulated local orchestras for Brandon and Hamiota honors and praised Alex Whyte for organzing the orchestras.

Quiet Matrimonial Union in Minnedosa Rectory

Bernice Evelyn Brannan and Robert James McKenzie wed at the Rectory Minnedosa on May 11 3 o clock officiated by Rev Father Holloway. The couple will reside in Rivers after a Lake of the Woods trip.

Short Course on Public Administration in Winnipeg

Information on Manitoba University Short Course on Public Administration and Finance to be held in Winnipeg from June 22 to June 191k. It aims to aid reeves and municipal officials in better duties and public understanding of municipal administration. Tuition eight dollars. residence six dollars for board and lodging. Also notes Kenton Field Day on Friday June 2. This marks the 18th annual event.

W G Thomas Retires After 32 Years With Railways

W G Thomas, long time machinist with Canadian National Railways and a Rivers resident, retires after 32 years service. Born 65 years ago, he arrived from England in 1907 and began with Canada Atlantic Railway before moving to Grand Trunk Pacific, later CN. Known as Bill to friends, he served as town councillor and Masonic member and remains active in local church life.

Railways Introduce Evening and Sunday Telegraph Service

Canadian National Telegraphs and Canadian Pacific Telegraphs announce a June 1 start for evening and Sunday telegraph service in Canada. Messages of up to forty words may be sent between 7 pm and 4 am, with rates matching existing ten word fast messages, to any point within Canada.
