Social notes from Rivers and area visitors

Miss Constance Offen and father Jc W Offen visited last weekend. Mr and Mrs J A Borrowman of Kingston Ott arrived for a Rivers summer. Mrs S Purvis of Edmont on Alta visits her parents Mr and Mrs John Robertson. Archibald Rutherford of West Summerland arrived to visit his brother W Rutherford. Mrs M Craig and Mrs L Scott of Brandon spent the weekend here with sister Mrs Albert Havlik. The Rev F W Lee and W H Humphries attended Brandon Presbytery meetings at Souris. Mrs George Florence of Winnipeg spent time with Mr and Mrs C J McFadden. The Rev A Rutherford of Milner BC will preach at Pettapiece and Rivers on May 18. Mr and Mrs Gilbert Thomas and son Ronald of Transcona visited with his parents Mr and Mrs W G Thomas. Mesdames Alfred and Ernest Wareham, B J D Ellis, F W Lee, E O Dyer and J Hedley attended WMS meetings of the presbyterial at Brandon. Mrs Lee contributed a paper on How to lead a discussion.

Social Evening at Lothair School raises 44 dollars

A junior Red Cross social evening at Lothair school on May 2 realized 44 dollars. A bazaar and games featuring pupil and community contributions capped by lunch raised funds to be forwarded to junior Red Cross headquarters.

Manitoba urged to draw U S factories to offset east rivals

Premier Stuart Gerson told Manitoba lawmakers that attracting United States branch factories could offset competition from Ontario and Quebec. He referenced a suggestion by Li. co. G. Mo Churchill and noted a research council he established.

Local Girl Engaged to RCAF Officer

FO Ruth E. Wareham of Winnipeg Manitoba and Sqdn Ldr R J Lawlor of Pictou Nova Scotia announce their engagement. Wareham, oldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Wareham, studied home economics at the University of Manitoba and undertook postgraduate work at Toronto General Hospital in 1943. Lawlor, son of Mr and Mrs James C Lawlor, a well known Maritime hockey figure, joined the RCAF in 1940 and earned the DFC for operations over Germany with bomber command.

The defence department announced plans for a summer construction project at Fort Churchill Manitoba to build a pipeline four miles to bring water from Lake Isabelle. The plan was disclosed in Ottawa in May by a government official.
