Wing Cmdr W E Hodgson DFC chief administrator at CIATC for pay year transfers to Flying Training at Claresholm Alberta as commanding officer. His career began in 1924 with the RCAF auxiliary, then the RAF in Britain, later service as a flying instructor, parachutist and helicopter pilot. He served with bomber command in WWII before returning to Canada.

Mrs M A Gustafson and late daughter arrive from Winnipeg for an extended visit with Mr and Mrs James Taylor. Mr and Mrs W Berg and Mrs J R Fowlie visit Rivers residents. Women members attend a WMS presbyterial meeting in Brandon. A public speaking contest will be held at Rivers Public School on Wednesday May 1 at 10:00 pm with contestants from Medina Lothair and Rivers. A father and son banquet planned for next Tuesday evening at the Region Hall begins at 6:30 with nonfathers invited. Jack Archibald arrives from Melita to serve at Manitoba Power Commission, replacing Ray Reid posted to Souris. The Osborne Home for Senior Citizens at Neepawa opens with attendance from across the province. Rivers attendees include Mesdames J Taylor Jr E O Dyes J Mitchell and J A Grummett and Hert Ford.
Wind and Dust Mark Record Heat Scene on Flight Path
A couple walking from an airport bus to the railroad mailbox changed color in a short trek as wind and frost whip First Avenue. Carmen struggles in railway yards with fig leaf winds, progress slow as jackets shield face. The storm lasts hours, catching Clear Lake visitors by surprise on return home and making driving difficult.

Seedtimeg Harve st Seed Free of Smut In Winter 1950 31
During winter 1950 31 the Line Elevators Farm Service tested 20 473 seed samples of wheat oats and barley for surface borne smut. Of 11 993 wheat samples 46 percent were contaminated and 19 percent contained smut balls. Smut spores appeared on 74 percent of 5391 oat samples with 69 percent carrying smut balls. Barley seed 5149 samples showed 40 percent contaminated and 24 percent had smut balls. Over 7 000 seed samples tested so far this winter reveal over 40 percent wheat and more than 80 percent barley and oats contaminated. Treatment is essential.

Former Residents Plan to Visit Here
About one thousand contestants took part in the musical festival at Yorkton Saskatchewan, according to Cyril J Foster formerly of Rivers. Of 22 entries in her piano class Helen Foster placed second. The Foster family were residents of Rivers and district for many years. Foster was transferred to the Saskatchewan centre years ago and now gardens and golf in off time. They expect to visit here again this summer.

Titanic Sinks After Sinking Iceberg Collision in 1912
The Titanic struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York and sank in just over two hours on April 14, 1912. Of the 2223 people aboard, 706 were saved, while the remaining perished. At that time it was the largest ship afloat.

Fish dish delights at women’s institute meeting
Friday’s regular meeting of the Women’s Institute featured a Fisheries Department representative who demonstrated fish cooking. The large attendance left no leftovers and one lady said not even a crumb remained. Members voted to donate to the cancer fund.

Paul O. Franklin Bereft in Winnipeg
Mrs. P. O. Franklin, 15, died in Winnipeg on Sunday. She was the wife of Paul Franklin of Rivers, who began his banking career here. The couple lived in Fort William for 13 years before returning to Manitoba. Funeral services were held on Wednesday. Burial followed at Brookside cemetery.

Rivers Resident Dies in Winnipeg Home
A Rivers resident died at her Winnipeg home last Friday after ailing for some time. Winnipeg, her birthplace, was her lifelong home. Funeral services were held in Winnipeg on Tuesday with burial at Elmwood cemetery. Surviving include her husband, one son Frederick Paul, her father F Elcombe, and sister Mrs E Erickson of Powell River BC.

Elephant seal caught by Indian fisherman near Uclu Elet
A rare southern Pacific elephant seal was netted by an Iwan fisherman near Uclu Elet in British Columbia. The Sea creature weighed about one ton and measured roughly 14 feet long with an elephantlike head, marking a striking example of the endangered species.
