Canadians Hold More Cash and War Bonds, Bank Report Says
The Bank of Canada annual report for 1944 shows ordinary Canadians have about $135 more cash or bank balance and an average of $580 in war bonds per person. War spending reached $17 billion, ten times World War I spending, with $20 billion total since the war began. Taxes covered half, with $6.6 billion financed by individual war bonds. Last year the Bank earned $20.3 million, sending $18.3 million to the federal treasury and adding $2 million to the contingency fund.
