Curling Club Notes reports Rivers Curling Club opened its second bonspiel with 23 rinks, repeating most lineups from the first. Three draws nightly at 6, 8, and 10, drawing many spectators. Alf Wareham returned to the ice as Howell Williams challenged with a 7 end, but Alfred prevailed after an extra end.
Lorenz Wiegand of Transcona, born 1865 in Neustadt Ontario, died March 7 in his 79th year. He lived in Rivers after 1908, ran a tailor shop, and served on town council and various Masonic orders. Funeral at Binkley’s Transcona with Elmwood Cemetery burial. Survived by daughter Lora and sister Mrs Heather of Waterloo.
Rivers Board of Trade resumes its annual banquet on Friday March 17 at 7 30 p m in the Community Hall Guest speaker Lieut J B Kelshall will talk and No 1 CNS personnel are hoped as guests Tickets cost 1 00 and are available immediately
Four airmen perished when a training plane from No.1 C.N.S. Rivers crashed about eight miles north of Douglas during a routine flight in a snow squall. Two RAF members were among the dead. F O Ralph Morgan Robbins and Cpl B H Wickware. Robbins had ties to Rivers and Pilot Mound. his Brandon-born wife was Do een Hicks. Funeral services for the RAF crew were held at St James Church with Full RCAf honors and interment at Rivers cemetery.
Public call for residents to bundle paper in tight bundles and place them on the sidewalk before 10 a.m. Saturday March 18 for pickup by a truck. RAGS are also badly needed and should be ready at the same time.
St James church announces Sunday schedule with a 7.30 p.m. service and a 11 a.m. Sunday School. Confirmation Class follows immediately after the evening service.
John Gilbert Parker, 32, of Rivers Manitoba, promoted to corporal on the establishment staff of No 10 District Depot Fort Osborne Barracks Winnipeg. Born McGregor Manitoba he worked as a painter at Rivers before joining the active army in July 1942. Married to Mrs Mary Parker the couple reside at Rivers.
