Prairie trash cover aids erosion control across prairie farms

In southern Alberta the trash cover or stubble mulch was developed to protect soil from wind and later water erosion. It reduces runoff, increases moisture, and moderates percolation. Machines include one way plows, blade tools, and duckfoot cultivators, with shallow cultivation and slow travel keys. The practice aims to conserve soil as Western Canada’s top concern and hinges on farmers’ care for the land.
